Interview: Kris Mae of KM Photography

We’ve already introduced you to some of our favorite caterers, event planners, and audio/visual engineers. Now let’s meet one of the people who is responsible for making sure you walk away with a flawless lasting keepsake of your wedding here at Weylin. Kris Mae is the brilliant photographer behind KM Photography.

Kris is a former model and Elite Model Management talent scout who eventually found her true passion behind the camera. According to Kris, “every ounce” of her goes into her work and her clients are “so encouraging every step of the way.”

Given how stunning her photos are, it’s easy to see why her clients, us included, are so encouraging. But don’t take our word for it, her work clearly speaks for itself.

Although Kris is a highly in demand photographer who is busy with commercial work, editorial shoots, and destination weddings, she was kind enough to take some time out of her full schedule and discuss what it’s like to capture what many would argue is the most important day of a couple’s life.

Hi, Kris. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. Let’s start off by having you describe your photography style.

My style is unique to me. It’s a mix of romantic, fashion and documentary styles that I have honed over 18 years.

So, how many weddings have you shot over the course of your career?

I have shot hundreds of weddings. I used to shoot over 50 per year, but now I limit it to 25, working with select clients that I have an amazing personal connection with- mostly from past client referrals.

Do you shoot with digital or film?

I shoot with a mix of digital and film, depending on my clients’ needs. There is something truly thoughtful and magical about film, but digital can be more efficient and quick for fast-paced weddings.

Do you have a preferred time of day or favorite time of year in which to shoot the couple?

My favorite time of day to shoot would be early morning or just before sunset. That’s where the soft, magic light exists. I love using all types of light though- it’s fun and you can really control the look of the final image. Fall is my favorite season. I don’t think that needs much explanation- haha! I love keeping my clients as comfortable as possible. Summer can be brutal on men in tuxedos.

Can you walk us through what is included in your most popular wedding package?

Our most popular package includes eight hours of coverage, high resolution images in a gorgeous custom box, and a large album. Our albums are stunning and they are an incredible way to pass down wedding images through the generations. It is so important to have an heirloom keepsake, it’s what your grand-kids will display at their wedding.

Finally, could you share a tip or two for the bride on how to make sure you don’t miss any shots that are really important to her on her big day?

I recommend making two lists- a list of family members (VIPs) that you want included in family photos, and a list of things that are important to you, like the favors you worked months to make with your sisters. Brides need to focus on having fun, and let the photographers focus on capturing the day. Give your photographers enough time for the pictures you want so no one feels rushed. You will have so many images you could never have even asked for that you will cherish.

Thanks so much, Kris! We’re looking forward to working with you again soon!
